Draught chamber

The draught chamber is reached through this door. When designing this chamber Ben thought that the wall with the inlet flues would change and slow the draught through the kiln, pulling the flames down to the floor and then letting them speed up again through the draught chamber. He hoped to get similar effects to those obtained in a Bizen style “secret chamber” between the first and second chambers of a previous kiln of his.

This chamber could just as well be regarded as a sutema with a sidestoking port.

This wall and flue system separates the draught chamber from the main chamber.
