The image at right shows the wood Ben uses in his kilns. It is cut from the Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii) trees on his property, visible in the background of the photo. Like a lot of Australian acacias these have a short lifespan so there is a supply of dead ones available for cutting.

Below are some of Ben´s experiments with Tasmanian materials.





At left is a triaxial blend of Coles Bay granite (at top), Forcett shale (lower left) and mixed Eucalypt ash. The granite is collected as sand on the beach and ball milled for 24 hours before use. Ben also collects decomposed diatoms for use as whiting, and uses a very plastic clay from near the lagoon visible from his workshop.
