Lid is made from slabs

The lid system is clearly a difficulty for this type of kiln, as it is for John Neely's train kiln which is similar in design. Of the lids Sandy says The lids are made from thick refractory slabs that I had given to me but any kiln shelf would do. I used to use fibre lids but now just lay a row of insulators on top and then pour very sloppy mortar on top of that. This seems to work better in terms of protecting the slabs from cracking and slowing the cooling down.
