A cast damper slab is inserted from each side of the kiln. The ends of these slabs are starting to crumble away.

This small port in the chimney can be seen by the stoker and is used as a cue for stoking.

Right: The third sidestoke port on each side, the one nearest the chimney, has a grate with an air supply from outside the kiln.
