This is the third incarnation of Sandy's long kiln and is a refinement of earlier versions. The single kiln chamber has a bourry firebox and three sidestoking ports, each with its own air supply and grate. The dark stain marks recent repairs. Chimney internal cross-section measures 12ins x 15ins. The top of this version is horizontal, and the floor is stepped up away from the firebox.

The sides of the chamber are all dense firebrick. In the Mark III they are very large bricks, 9ins x 12ins x 4.5ins. But other options are to build the inside of dense firebrick and the outside of insulating bricks. I always just use whatever I have got. Nearer the firebox they can be higher in alumina. As the kiln walls are easily rebuilt they don't have to be heavy duty grade bricks. The firebox and throat arch should be high aluminas if possible. ---- Sandra Lockwood
