The
chamber could easily be altered. The walls could be raised in one
section to accommodate larger pots. The chamber could be
divided to form two chambers, the one nearer the chimney to act as a sutema.
Alternatively, as illustrated below, the chamber could initially be
much smaller with a horizontal channel, like a horizontal
chimney, leading to the vertical chimney. This could allow the chimney
to be external to the kiln shed, or allow for the construction of a
small kiln initially with the possibility of increasing the length of
the chamber later if required. While blocking off part of an anagama
always seems like a defeat, our attitude to this kiln is that it should
be versatile.
