To
construct the rear section of the kiln the arch was cut down to
form rings of diminishing size.

section of an arch. No actual arch bricks were used. The darker
hot face bricks were laid on the wooden ach form and mortared
together with an air setting refractory castable material. The
outer layer of common bricks was mortared with a sand and clay
mixture. On top of the outer brick layer is a two inch layer of
ceramic fibre with a thin skin made from clay, sand, sawdust and
cement.
