Thompson's soda kiln plan |
Peter calls this kiln No 5 and says of it: I wanted a kiln that was easy on wood use and to use by the untrained or visitors. It has a big internal firebox for side stoking, to get a lot of direct fire contact on the work. Saggars and a loose brick bag wall are used to deflect fire up to the arch. I am still trialling different settings. I plan to return to extended stoneware firings for the future firings as these have produced the better results. Firing duration has been 18 to 20 hours but the longer firing times of 30 to 36 hours give a better result over all in terms of glaze melt quality and fire patina.
