This kiln was built in 1990 and the chimney has been replaced twice in attempts to improve performance. The first replacement was taller than the original and the second, more successful, rebuild increased the cross section of the chimney to 12 inches by 18 inches. A cross section of the kiln wall. The inner layer (at the bottom) is constructed of dense firebrick. Above that is a one inch layer of low grade ceramic fibre, followed by a layer of chicken wire to help locate the outer layer of adobe. The adobe layer is made of clay, sand and sawdust plus 5% cement. The adobe brew is sieved more finely as the outer skin of the kiln is approached. |
