A small double Bourry box kiln

SideStoke home

This kiln has two Bourry (downdraft) fireboxes underneath the kiln chamber, and it is not easy to decide where the flames travel by looking at the photo. In the smaller image the red line shows the general direction of the flame path from the right hand firebox to the exit flue at the back of the kiln (indicated by the blue mark). The path from the firebox on the left (obscured by Carol) is the mirror image of that one. This kiln has a very even temperature distribution, and we use it for salt-glazing, although it could just as well be used without salt. The link below will lead you to the plans for this kiln.

The critical proportions of this kiln are A=7.6, B=7, C=14.2, D=56.5, where E=100 and V=11.7% of W.
